Bursary Places

TRACs BURSARY POLICY 2010-11

A limited amount of bursaries (free places) will be available during the 2010-11 academic year (September 2010- December 2010). These bursaries will be allocated on a first come first served basis on courses throughout the year. (Bursaries will only be available on courses of 4 or more hours duration.) Places will be limited to one per person, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Note: Bursary (free) places are contingent on attendance. If you do not attend having
booked a free place, you will be invoiced for the course fee.

Learners who may be eligible will be:

• Adults without a Level 2 qualification
• Learners living in more deprived areas of the city1 (based upon postcode, evidence of address such as utility bill may be required)
• Unemployed / economically inactive
• Learners with physical, learning or mental health difficulties
• An older person (60 plus)
• New learners2
• In receipt of income related benefit (see note below)
• Of black or other ethnic minority origin


To apply learners need only be eligible under one category.

Income related benefits, formerly known as means tested benefits, include:

• Income support
• Working tax credit
• Job seekers allowance (income based)
• Housing benefit
• Council tax benefit
• Asylum seeker receiving the equivalent of income based benefit
• Unwaged dependant on someone in receipt of benefits listed above
• Pension credit

Examples of acceptable evidence as proof of receipt of a means tested benefit include:
Written notification of entitlement (received by all recipients)

• Benefit book
• Portsmouth Leisure Card
